Just Dive CIC
Just Dive CIC was founded by Laura Hamilton. The social enterprise provides an accessible and affordable scuba diving experience for all.
Laura is a PADI qualified scuba diving instructor with over 16 years of global diving experience, who set up Just Dive to break down the barriers to those who would love to try scuba diving, but previously thought it was inaccessible to them. Based on the west coast of Scotland, the social enterprise provides a pay as you go option and unique services to meet client’s individual needs, allowing all ages and backgrounds to give scuba diving a go.
We spoke to Laura about her experience setting up a social enterprise and her future plans for Just Dive CIC.
What inspired you to set up Just Dive CIC?
I saw that women, children, and those with and without medical diagnoses, really struggled or were unable to access the aquatic therapeutic benefits that scuba diving can bring.
What did you find most challenging in setting up?
Finding financial support for such a perceived unorthodox service has been a challenge. Working against the narrative that only fit, financially well off people can and should be able to access scuba diving
How will the Social Innovation Competition Award help your social enterprise?
The good that this work will do for so many groups is astonishing. Without Firstport’s support this would be far harder. It will help me to help others, using amazing, exciting services for all
What are your plans for the future of your social enterprise?
Establish a range of local, easily accessible and affordable scuba/mermaid/therapeutic services. Ultimately, a purpose built multi-use dive centre facility is my goal!
Do you have any top tips for other social enterprises?
Don’t give up. If you believe as passionately as I do, then take each stage as a slow developer and you will get there
